Mentioned in Book

Submitted by Leo Klein on Fri, 5/25/18 (5:55am)

I see I was mentioned in a book (link). The book's title (translated) is "Spirited Resistance from the Outside: Austrians in US Propaganda Units in WWII", written by Florian Traussnig (source). Mention of me comes from a blog post I wrote a few years ago where I discussed my father's role in the allied broadcast program called ABSIE. Interesting. Daddy is mentioned often in write-ups like this; first time however that I ever saw a reference to me.

Photos from Library School Project to Be Used in French TV Documentary

Submitted by Leo Klein on Mon, 2/25/13 (8:19pm)

Well, here's some interesting news: A French TV production company called 'Temps Noir' is producing a documentary for the French TV station 'Arte' on the history of anarchism 'all around the world' and they want to use photos from an online project I did several years ago while at Library School at Queens College, CUNY.

The project was called 'Red Scare (1918-1921), an Image Database' and represented both my interest in American labor history as well as the still rather nascent technology of web content production. We're talking 1997-1998 here.

Every so often, I get a request to use one or more of the photos -- typically for print publication. This is my first documentary. Needless to say I look forward to getting a copy of the final product.

Screencast on Using Drupal Mentioned in Code4Lib Journal

Submitted by Leo Klein on Mon, 9/13/10 (7:37pm)

This is nice. The screencast I put together on creating a database listing using Drupal is mentioned in a Code4Lib article:

Code4lib Journal

"Creating a Library Database Search using Drupal"

When Florida Gulf Coast University Library was faced with having to replace its database locator, they needed to find a low-cost, non-staff intensive replacement for their 350 plus databases search tool. This article details the development of a library database locator, based on the methods described in Leo Klein’s “Creating a Library Database Page using Drupal” online presentation. The article describes how the library used Drupal along with several modules, such as CCK, Views, and FCKeditor. It also discusses various Drupal search modules that were evaluated during the process.

Old Projects Never Die : Red Scare (1918-1921)

Submitted by Leo Klein on Sun, 9/7/08 (11:56am)

"Red Scare (1918-1921)" was a project I did for extra credit while finishing up my MLS at Queens College (CUNY). It must have been around 1997.

The online exhibit consisted of political cartoons with some photos from the period 1918-1921. There were over a hundred images illustrating the hysteria of the time -- most scanned from hard-bound copies of the Literary Digest, then conveniently housed in the stacks of NYU Bobst Library. The exhibit originally was hosted by Newman Library, Baruch College (CUNY) where I went after NYU. I later moved it to my personal site at: http://leoklein.com/redscare/

Anyway, every once and a while, I get a request for permission to use one or two of the images. There was a lot of interest in them around the time of 9/11 but even afterwards, the requests still come in.

I usually explain that the copyright has long run out on the images and that they're free for the downloading. The latest request was from one of the College Prep Testing Services. They want to use one or two of the images for their section on U.S. History.

I guess, I'll have to upgrade the project at some point. Ten years is a long time for content like this on the Web.
