RIP - Koko Taylor

Submitted by Leo Klein on Wed, 6/3/09 (4:55pm)

Chicago Blues great Koko Taylor has passed away.

That's really sad. I remember seeing her at a club (probably on Lincoln Ave.) back in the day. I told her I was moving to Paris the next week. She hugged me and told me to take care of myself.

It was the best send-off a guy from Chicago, new to foreign countries, could have gotten.

RIP.

kiddyland_logo.jpgIs nothing sacred? Kiddieland, the amusement park for Chicago's toddlers, is set to close after this season. It's the end of the world.

Sneezing in the Time of Cholera

Submitted by Leo Klein on Tue, 4/28/09 (4:59pm)

So of course at the moment I've come down with a cold. I'm sneezing and sniffling through much of the day. Needless to say, it's not exactly the best time to come down with such conditions.

Thank goodness, there's a nifty little guide "Is it a Cold or the Flu?" (pdf) put out by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) available on this page...

MPOW: Fear of Shooting Leads to UIC Building Evacuation

Submitted by Leo Klein on Fri, 3/6/09 (11:18pm)

It was a normal Friday afternoon. I heard a police siren outside. In fact, I heard a number of police sirens. I looked outside the window and more than half a dozen squad cars came to a screeching halt just outside.

Someone remarked that it might be a bank robbery from across the street. Then suddenly, one of the admin assistants came running in first telling us that someone was running around our building with a gun and that we should duck into one of the private offices for cover. Next came someone running in saying we should vacate the premises immediately.

Obama a Lefty ?

Am I the last person on earth to realize that Obama writes with his left hand? You know us 'lefties' feel a kinship for one another. Notice he's wearing his watch on his left hand as well. A true lefty might wear it on his right -- to afford mobility to the dominant hand.

I took the train down to DC for the Inauguration. It looked like the entire progressive half of the country was on its way to the nation's Capital.

In the train car on one side, a man was reading "The Return of Depression Economics" by Paul Krugman. On the other side, a woman was reading "The Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein. Obama regalia -- hats, pins, teeshirts -- were everywhere. As we reached our final destination, one woman suddenly broke into 'This Land is Your Land'.
