At the Ref Desk (4/25/17): Someone calls but when I pick up the phone all I get is background noise -- people talking, etc. Did he or she just sit on their smartphone and dial out accidentally? Interesting jumping off point for a work of fiction... [more...]

MPOW: Fear of Shooting Leads to UIC Building Evacuation

Submitted by Leo Klein on Fri, 3/6/09 (11:18pm)

It was a normal Friday afternoon. I heard a police siren outside. In fact, I heard a number of police sirens. I looked outside the window and more than half a dozen squad cars came to a screeching halt just outside.

Someone remarked that it might be a bank robbery from across the street. Then suddenly, one of the admin assistants came running in first telling us that someone was running around our building with a gun and that we should duck into one of the private offices for cover. Next came someone running in saying we should vacate the premises immediately.

Obama a Lefty ?

Am I the last person on earth to realize that Obama writes with his left hand? You know us 'lefties' feel a kinship for one another. Notice he's wearing his watch on his left hand as well. A true lefty might wear it on his right -- to afford mobility to the dominant hand.

I took the train down to DC for the Inauguration. It looked like the entire progressive half of the country was on its way to the nation's Capital.

In the train car on one side, a man was reading "The Return of Depression Economics" by Paul Krugman. On the other side, a woman was reading "The Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein. Obama regalia -- hats, pins, teeshirts -- were everywhere. As we reached our final destination, one woman suddenly broke into 'This Land is Your Land'.

Hot Dog Stand 'Wieners Circle' Closed Down By Board of Health

It's practically an institution on the North Side of Chicago. The Hot Dog Stand 'Wieners Circle' has been closed down by the Board of Health due, according to a sign on the door, to problems with their "hot water service". In other words, the pipes have burst.

I remember going there as an undergrad after a late night on the town. We'd first go to Neo's (then in its 'New Wave' phase) and then hit Wieners Circle for a Polish with grilled onions. This was way before they developed the schtick about swearing to customers and concentrated instead on the quality of the food.

They're selling Obama hats at my local 7-11. I know 'business is business' but this is the first time I can recall when the 'swag' from a presidential campaign was thought valuable enough to hit the retail shelves.

The Parboiled Rice Has Come! The Parboiled Rice Has Come!

Yea, the Parboiled Rice has come! For 10 years, I lived in New York City and for 10 years I ate Parboiled Rice from the Associated Supermarket either on 14th St. or 23rd St.

So what do I do when I start running out of the cherished grains? Why I send for 10 pounds more of course -- via Priority Mail.

Here's the latest shipment.

Earthquake in Chicago

Well, the bed started to wobble and I thought either I should've gotten a better bed or maybe the floor in my new place wasn't as intact as I had assumed.

And no, I did not run down to the street screaming.
