At the Ref Desk (4/25/17): Someone calls but when I pick up the phone all I get is background noise -- people talking, etc. Did he or she just sit on their smartphone and dial out accidentally? Interesting jumping off point for a work of fiction... [more...]

Redesign of UIC Admissions & Records Website

Submitted by Leo Klein on Tue, 1/4/11 (11:29am)

As if I didn't have enough to do over the holidays (see below), I redesigned the website template for UIC's Office of Admissions & Records.

Basically what I did was to bring the thing into compliance with the University's new top-level website which they changed at the beginning of the school year.

The holidays are always a great time to do something like this (since basically no one's looking) so you can believe I worked my butt off to get this done on time.

Bateman School Condo Having Trouble Being Sold

First there was my father's bachelor apartment on Burton near Wells which apparently the current owner can't sell for the life of him -- current asking price: a measly $1.8 million (down from $3.1 mil).

Now there's the place where I went to school on Astor and Burton -- the former McCormick Mansion, donated by the McCormick family to Ellen and Alice Bateman to run as a school. I went there from kindergarten to 8th grade. The place later closed down and was divided into separate condo units.

Early Voting - Election 2010

I love Early Voting. The polling place is just across the street from the DePaul Library. It used to be I had to head out to the County Building downtown.

There was a steady stream of people though nothing like the crowd last time round (i.e. Nov. 2008). The list of judges to vote for was a huge confusing pain in the butt. It's amazing that anyone ever thought this way of choosing judges ever made sense. We should end it now.

I was at the ILA Conference for a short sweep through the exhibits on Wednesday. The two chief attractions (at least for me) were 1) Free pass for the exhibits and 2) Free lunchtime buffet (pictured above).

"Queremos una biblioteca!"

Article on the sit-in by parents of a school field house slated for demolition which they want to turn into a library (Chicago Tribune, 9/18/2010, p 4):

ChicagoTribune_logo.gifParents said the school's classroom libraries are too small and lack substantial book collections.
